Wild-type populations of M. extorquens PA1 contain subpopulations of cells with especially high tolerance to formaldehyde. Upon addition of formaldehyde to the growth medium, the sensitive majority of cells loses viability, and only the tolerant cells continue to grow. We harvested a population of these tolerant cells after selection on 4 mM formaldehyde and re-sequenced the genome using Illumina HiSeq, in order to asses whether there were any genetic changes associated with high formaldehyde tolerance.
