Population living within one mile of United States Toxics Release Inventory facilities from 1987 to 2024

Census-block-level dataset of residential proximity to U.S. EPA Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) facilities, covering all 38 reporting years 1987–2024. Locations of 64,502 unique facilities were joined to the internal points of 8,174,955 census blocks (50 states, DC, Puerto Rico) by exact WGS84 geodesic distance, with population held fixed at the 2020 Decennial Census. In 2024, 57,609,744 people (17.2% of 334,735,155 residents) lived within one statute mile of at least one reporting facility. Contents: national summary with race/ethnicity, poverty (with margin of error), income, and CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index breakdowns; annual 1987–2024 time series; state and tract tables; block-level Parquet record; threshold sensitivity band (0.9/1.0/1.1 mi); facility exclusions list; the exact 38 EPA input files used (EPA revises these — archived copies match the manifest hashes); the 84,120-tract SVI extract; full pipeline source; and a provenance manifest recording every network retrieval with URL, timestamp, and SHA-256 hash. Built by a single-command reproducible pipeline that resolves all inputs from live authoritative sources at run time and passes seven validation checks. All primary inputs are U.S. Government works (17 U.S.C. § 105).
