资源简介:
Diving for sponges is prohibited in the Florida Keys, but the law goes back to the days of the helmeted diver who crushed young sponges under lead boots. Recommendations to re-permit diving (by SCUBA) have raised objections because of the possibility of overfishing. However, divers, who can cut instead of hook, and can also leave a minimum portion of the sponge attached, could mitigate the prospect of overfishing. Studies here show survival rates as high as 71% for cut sponges vs 41% for those hooked. Grant no. NA80AA-D-00038
