The composition of soil fungal communities often shifts after forest disturbances. Whether underlying abiotic heterogeneity in soils tempers the effects of landscape-scale disturbances is unclear. We used landscape-scale outbreaks of mountain pine beetle in lodgepole pine forests of western Canada to elucidate whether soil physical and chemical properties underpin fungal community composition and function in these disturbed forests.
