In 2019, about 50.7 percent of people in Italy used to travel for work or study. The highest shares of commuting population in Italy were recorded in the northern regions. For instance, in Trentino-South Tyrol 56.5 percent of people used to commute, closely follewed by Lombardy.In Italy, commuters using public transportation were mostly students. Overall, the most common means of public transportation taken every day were tram and buses.
