Water samples were taken at 3 depths from lakes around the state of Iowa once a week over a 15 week period from May to August in 2018. These water samples were combined and subsampled for DNA extraction and subsequent sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene to create phylogenetic profiles of the microbiomes. The overall goal of the study was to explore harmful algal blooms caused by cyanobacteria and look at the microbial community structure in relation to those events.
