「世界で最も危険な動物ランキング」は、どの動物が1年間に平均でどれだけの人の命を奪っているかをまとめたものです。1位の座を獲得したのは、意外にもヘビやライオンのような一般的に"危険"とされる動物ではありません。年間犠牲者数の平均でみると、世界で最も危険な動物は蚊です。蚊に命を奪われた人の数は世界全体で年間100万人にのぼり、それに比べてヘビによる犠牲者は約10万人、ライオンに襲われて命を失った人は約250人となっています。さらに意外なのは、3位に犬がランクインしている点です。人間の「一番の友」と呼ばれる犬ですが、年間約3万人が犬に襲われて命を落としているとされ、主な死因は狂犬病への感染によるものとみられています。 
マラリア 
蚊が世界で最も危険とされるのは、蚊によって媒介されるさまざまな病原体が人々を死に至らしめるためです。なかでも、世界で最も多くの犠牲者を出している感染症がマラリアです。マラリアとは、マラリア原虫をもった蚊に刺されることで感染する病気で、主な症状として発熱、悪寒、頭痛、吐き気が挙げられ、治療が遅れると死に至る場合もあります。この病気は、アフリカや東南アジア地域の発展途上国で感染者数が極めて多く、2020年には全世界で62万7千人がマラリアにより命を落としています。 
米国における蚊媒介性疾患 
米国で最も報告例が多い蚊媒介性疾患は、ウエストナイル熱、マラリア、デング熱です。とはいえ、マラリアやジカ熱、デング熱に関しては、その多くが他国で感染症に罹患した後に入国・帰国した旅行者であることがわかっています。2018年に米国で最も多くの蚊媒介性疾患が報告された州は、カリフォルニア州、ニューヨーク州、テキサス州でした。

Even more astonishing is the fact that dogs, often referred to as humans' 'best friends,' rank third. It is reported that about 30,000 people are attacked by dogs each year, with rabies infection being the primary cause of death. The mosquito is considered the most dangerous in the world due to the various pathogens transmitted by it that can lead to death. Among these, malaria is the most deadly infection, with symptoms including fever, chills, headache, and nausea, which can be fatal if treatment is delayed. This disease is prevalent in developing countries in Africa and Southeast Asia, with 627,000 deaths worldwide attributed to malaria in 2020. In the United States, the most reported mosquito-borne diseases are West Nile virus, malaria, and dengue fever. However, many cases of malaria, Zika fever, and dengue fever involve travelers who contracted the infection in other countries. In 2018, the states with the highest number of reported mosquito-borne diseases in the United States were California, New York, and Texas.
