More than 1,000 humans have been diagnosed with tularemia acquired in Spain since the first report of the disease in 1997. This makes Spain an ideal case for investigating recent molecular evolution and the spatial epidemiology of the causative agent, the bacterium Francisella tularensis. We here compared single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and variable-number tandem repeats (VNTRs) in whole-genome sequence (WGS) data as evolutionary markers.
