Description
The catch_data.txt file is a tab-separated ascii file. The file contains the raw data used in all analyses of catch records from the Kenyan artisanal fishery between 1995 and 2005. Please note that catch records from 1995 begin in September. All data analyses in the publication use only complete annual data for the ten-year period between January 1996 and December 2005.

Column headings:

date = day that catch was landed (mm/dd/yyyy)

month = month that catch was landed

year = year that catch was landed

management group = location of landing site (Kenyatta beach, South coast, North coast)

landing site = name of landing site

area (km2) = area of fishing ground at landing site (units are km2)

gear = fishing gear used to land catch: beach seine, spear gun, trap, hand line, net, kenyatta net (please see Methods for description and classification of gear types)

# of fisherman = number of fishers present at the landing site at the given date

# of boats = number of actively fishing boats presents at the landing site at the given date

catch (kg) = weight of catch, recorded to the nearest 0.5 kg

catch name = name of catch recorded to six major groups: Rabbitfish, Parrotfish, Goatfish, Scavengers, Octopus, Mixed and Others. The "Mixed" group consists of demersal catch species that were not divided into the previous five groups. he "Others" group represents pelagic catch that was not included in any subsequent analyses

fish family = scientific name, where possible, of catch: Siganidae, Scaridae, Mullidae, Scavengers, Octopus, Mixed and Others

functional group = functional feeding group classification of catch from FishBase (please see Methods and Appendix A). "Mixed" and "Others" were excluded from functional group analyses

family trophic level = mean trophic level calculated from trophic levels of commonly targeted species within each family (please see Methods and Appendix A). trophic level information obtained from FishBase. "Mixed" and "Others" categories were from functional group analyses
