Arctic charr are important salmonid fish in Holarctic fresh-water ecosystems and fisheries. In the short time frame since the last ice age (ca 15,000 yrs) they have colonized a wide variety of aquatic habitats (lakes, streams, rivers and the sea) and vary by life-history type (anadromous vs. lacustrine). They are noted for very high phenotypic and genetic variability which can make species taxonomy and conservation efforts problematic. Even with recent scientific studies, resolving the role of charr diversity is difficult as altering ecosystems are changing faster than diversity can be documented.
