Hybrid Approaches to Fabricating Bespoke Assistive Technology: Designing for Evolving Symptoms of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

This thesis investigates why assistive devices often stop working for people with Motor Neuron Disease as their condition changes. It shows that slow systems, fixed designs, and lack of personal fit cause many devices to be abandoned. The research develops new, easy-to-use methods for creating personalised supports directly in clinics, using simple digital tools and everyday materials. It demonstrates how clinicians can adapt devices quickly as needs evolve. The work provides a practical approach to making assistive technology more responsive, affordable, and respectful of people’s daily lives.
