资源简介:
The study of microbial diversity and its metabolism, as well as the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, is an emerging frontier of biological, environmental, and biotechnological sciences. Accessing the microbial genetic heritage through innovative techniques, such as next-generation sequencing and metagenomics, makes it possible to evaluate and map the existing microbial diversity in the studied environments. Among the main hydrographic basins that the Dominican Republic has, we have the rivers: Yaque del Norte and Yaque del Sur supply drinking water to the central provinces and regions of the country. Along its course, these present river regions that directly or indirectly come into contact with uncontrolled urban growth and heavily industrialized areas. Anthropic action from provinces, municipalities, cities, neighborhoods, and industries can contribute to the deposit of waste in the main hydrographic basins, which can translate into serious health problems for marine life and human life. This study aims to characterize microbial diversity and identify and characterize its resistomes and mechanisms of transfer of resistance to antibiotics between the environment and humans. Understanding the microbial communities will allow the development of strategies and methodologies to reduce the impact and risks that antibiotic-resistant bacteria can cause and improve the environmental conditions of the country's main rivers.
