Worked goose radii from medieval England: What were they used for?

This article was written as part of a conference proceedings in honour of Dale Serjeantson in 2018 (ICAZ Bird Working Group, 9th meeting, 8-11 June 2018, Sheffield). Since Quaternary International’s practice is to strip page numbers from references, I have also uploaded the final draft that includes page numbers in the references, as well as the catalogue (table 1). Abstract: This paper examines an artefact type of unknown function, found in several places across medieval England. These artefacts are mostly made from goose radii, but other species, such as chicken and hare, are also known. The worked radii have often been interpreted as being related to writing, but a closer examination suggests that they are more likely to be awls. Strid, L. 2022.
