Surface Wave Attenuation over a Permeable Bottom

This dataset contains experimental data from the Master’s thesis “Surface Wave Attenuation over a Permeable Bottom” conducted at the Hydrodynamics Laboratory, University of Oslo, in spring 2026. The experiments were performed in a 25 m long, 0.5 m wide, and 1 m tall wave tank filled with fresh water at room temperature. Two water depths were investigated: 20 cm and 30 cm. Two bottom configurations were tested: a bare tank bottom and a permeable bottom consisting of 35 vertical PMMA plates. The plates were 3 m long, 5 cm tall, and 5 mm thick, with 1 cm spacing between plates. The plate section was located between 6.3 m and 9.3 m from the wave maker. The dataset contains raw and processed surface elevation measurements from four acoustic probes positioned along the tank at 4.86 m, 6.69 m, 7.87 m, and 9.15 m from the wave maker. The raw data are organized by water depth, plate configuration, wave frequency, and forcing amplitude. Each experiment folder includes raw water level time series (*.csv), experiment metadata (*.meta.txt), and automatically generated statistics (*.stats.csv). Processed time series are provided in the Processed_files/ directory. Summary files containing calculated wave amplitudes and derived quantities for each experimental configuration are included in the Calculated_amps/ directory. Folder names follow the convention fXX for wave frequency in Hz (e.g. f11 = 1.1 Hz) and aXX for wave maker forcing amplitude in Volts (e.g. a01 = 0.1 V). Processed filenames containing p005 correspond to experiments performed with the plates inserted into the tank. The dataset also contains Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The PIV/ directory includes raw bitmap image sequences and processed velocity fields from experiments conducted with the plate configuration installed. These experiments were performed at a frequency of 1.4 Hz with forcing amplitudes of 0.1 V, 0.2 V, and 0.3 V. Waves propagated from right to left, and the PIV field of view began 8.06 m from the wave maker. Processed PIV results are provided as NetCDF files containing horizontal and vertical velocity components (u, w).
