Whole genome sequencing of multi-drug resistant isolates of commensal Escherichia coli was used to gain insight into the pool of resistance genes in this component of the human gut microbiome, and potential mechanisms by which these genes are spread. Strains of E. coli were isolated from rectal swabs of healthy college students, and tested for antibiotic resistance using disk diffusion assays. The six isolates sequenced were independently isolated, and exhibited high-level resistance to at least three major classes of antibiotics that are ordinarily effective against Gram-negative species.
