资源简介:
This study reconsiders key theoretical puzzles of Chinese popular nationalism through a nationwide longitudinal analysis. Drawing on pooled cross-sectional data from the 2015 and 2019 Chinese Social Governance Survey (CSGS), it investigates the associations of school education, democratic values, and perceptions of international threats with Chinese popular nationalism. Our findings reveal a gradual shift. Specifically, higher education no longer correlates with lower nationalism but instead shows stronger nationalism, particularly among postgraduates. Furthermore, the association between democratic values and nationalism is contingent on type, with substantive democratic values linked to the highest levels of nationalism, surpassing procedural or ambiguous values. Lastly, perceptions of international threats consistently correlate positively with nationalism. These insights significantly advance the microlevel understanding of evolving Chinese nationalism.
