2020年 日本の学校種類別にみる進学率・就学率

2020年度の日本の生徒・児童の義務教育就学率は、ほぼ100パーセントでした。義務教育とは、国や政府、保護者が児童に対して受けさせる義務を負う教育のことで、小学校1年生から中学校3年生までの9年間です。 
義務教育ではない日本の高校 
義務教育を終了して中学校を卒業した生徒には、就職するか、高等学校や高等専門学校、大学などに進学して学問を継続する道が開かれています。直近のデータによると、日本全にある約800校の大学には、約130万人の女子学生と約160万人の男子学生が在学していたことがわかっています。日本の大学は、世界大学ランキングで上位にランクインされることが多く、なかでも東京大学は高い評価を得ています。 
日本の教育システムの特徴 
日本の成人識字率は約99パーセントに達しています。経済協力開発機構（OECD）が進めている学習到達度調査（PISA）プログラムによると、日本の15歳の生徒は、国際比較で教育水準を示しており、すべての科目でOECDの標準より高いスコアを獲得したとされます。特に理系科目が優秀で、数学と理科の平均値はそれぞれ530点近くに達しています。また、スポーツや文化の面では、クラブ活動や部活が学校での生活の重要な部分を占めており、球技や柔道など日本の伝統的なスポーツから、芸術や茶道などの文化系クラブまで、さまざまな活動が行われています。

Compulsory education refers to the education that the state, government, and guardians are obligated to provide for children, spanning nine years from the first grade of elementary school to the third grade of junior high school. Students who have completed compulsory education and graduated from junior high school have the path open to them of either entering the workforce or pursuing further education in high schools, vocational schools, or universities. According to recent data, approximately 1.3 million female students and 1.6 million male students are enrolled in universities across Japan, which number about 800 schools. Japanese universities often rank highly in global university rankings, with the University of Tokyo receiving particularly high accolades. The characteristics of Japan's educational system include an adult literacy rate of approximately 99%. According to the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Japanese students who are 15 years old demonstrate higher education standards in international comparison, achieving higher scores than the OECD standard in all subjects. Particularly, science subjects excel, with the average scores for mathematics and science reaching nearly 530 points. Moreover, in terms of sports and culture, club activities and extracurricular clubs play an important part in school life, ranging from traditional Japanese sports such as ball games and judo to cultural clubs such as art and tea ceremony.
