This article presents the history of Polish education after World War II, and covers the period of the rule of socialist state from 1944 to the present day, as a stage of great changes within the borders of the Polish state. In 1989, after the Polish Round Table Agreement and in connection with the Revolutions of 1989, a new order was built with the participation of workers’ trade unions, the then leading trade union from 1980, the formally existing Independent Self-Governing Trade Union „Solidarity”. One of the main directions of social policy at that time was the reform of the education system implemented since 1999 by the then Ministry of National Education. In the background of the changing reality caused by the new system, the basic conditions of the most important ministerial decisions, up to the present times, have been shown.
