Encephalitozoon romaleae represents a recently described species, and the only known member of the genus Encephalitozoon that is capable of infecting arthropods (all other sister-species infect vertebrates, including humans). The annotation of this genome allows the identification of those genomic changes that are responsible for the adaptation of microsporidian parasites to evolutionary unrelated hosts and demonstrate how horizontal gene transfers can result in drastic metabolic changes.
