The study of novel nitrogen-based compounds is an extremely compelling one. As technological solids, these systems can be used for their high energy density or superhard properties as well as to build empirical chemical knowledge. In recent history, nitrogen has been studied as part of binary systems with the majority of the periodic table. However, one family of elements has yet to be studied: the halogens. This proposal focuses on one of these systems, N-Cl, using laser-heated diamond anvil cells up to 130 GPa and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD).
