Dataset for: Prove of concept study for in-depth hotspot-level ABD / varietal diversity timeline comparison: dataset Vargas (1949-1954) occurrence

Peru is one of the countries in the world that have more than 2000 ancestral varieties of native potatoes. Diversity is conserved on farms and in communities for subsistence use. It is a highly valued heritage. Using Survey123, we conducted a study to understand what potato varieties are in use across 30 Andean communities in southern Peru. We interviewed 300 potato farmers to understand what varieties they grow, and where. Our results were compared against a previous study by Cesar Vargas Calderon published in the 1950’s. In the 1950’s Cesar Vargas Calderon, a prestigious botanist wrote a detailed paper describing potato varieties in southern Peru. We loaded the entire list of varieties from the Vargas study into Survey123 and used this information for comparative analysis. Here described the morphological characteristics such as Tuber Skin color, Flesh color, tuber shape, and others.
