This study compared the phylogeographic history and contemporary demography of coevolving rattlesnakes and ground squirrels in California. The provides a perspective based on evolutionary history for ongoing studies of snake-squirrel interactions, and also tested the prediction that local differences in population genetic diversity and effective population size would predict the degree of local adaptation in extant populations.
