A High-Resolution Dataset of Roads of the Roman Empire: Itiner-e static version 2024

This dataset represents the 2024 canonical version of the Itiner-e dataset, described in the publication de Soto et al. (submitted). A growing version is hosted at https://itiner-e.org. Itiner-e is the first comprehensive, detailed and spatially detailed digital dataset of the roads of the Roman Empire (ca. 300 BCE-300 CE). It has been created by (1) identifying roads based on existing scholarship including atlases, regional summary publications, survey reports, excavation reports, gazetteers and milestones; (2) localizing roads using modern and historical topographic maps, and aerial and satellite photography; (3) digitizing roads and their metadata, and cleaning the data. The principal contributing institutions are Aarhus University (project MINERVA, PI Tom Brughmans) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (project Viator-e, PI Pau de Soto) with numerous collaborators from other institutions (see 'Creators').
