Ever been deep into a mobile game, and your phone just starts overheating? Since regular phones don't have built-in cooling like gaming phones do, you end up slapping on an external cooler. But here's the problem: it mostly cools the battery instead of the chipset. Over time, this actually degrades your battery health. But if you don't use a fan, the battery overheats anyway, and its health drops regardless. So, what's the fix? Hey everyone! I'm Aditya Kurnia Putra, but you can just call me Adit. I'm from Kediri, Indonesia, and as I'm typing this, I'm currently an 11th grader in high school. I'm writing this to pitch an idea to smartphone manufacturers: a new concept for cooling chipsets with external coolers. I call it "Bypass Cooling." Here's the basic idea. Usually, we attach external coolers to the back of the phone, right over the battery area. Because of that, it doesn't just cool the chipset; it chills the whole phone. My workaround uses Copper and Aerogel Composite. What do we do with them? We build a receptor that I imagine looking a lot like a wireless charging coil. I call this component the "Heat Catcher." Why "Heat Catcher" and not "Cool Catcher"? Simple! In thermodynamics, there is no such thing as "cold"—there's only the absence of heat. Hence, the Heat Catcher. Anyway, back to the design. Around the edges of this Heat Catcher, we use an Aerogel Composite to insulate the temperature it collects so it doesn't leak. The cooling effect is then channeled through a thin cable. This cable has an Aerogel Composite outer jacket with a copper core inside. It runs straight to the chipset, and the copper makes direct contact with it. This way, only the chipset gets cooled, leaving the battery and other components alone. But wait, what if you're not using an external cooler while gaming? Wouldn't the Heat Catcher get extremely hot since the copper is directly touching the working chipset? The solution is Nitinol wire. Nitinol is a nickel-titanium alloy with shape-memory capabilities. For example, if you shape a Nitinol wire into a heart, twist it, and completely mess it up—the moment you heat it up, it snaps right back into that original heart shape. So, if you want to use the external cooler, you just toggle it on in the phone's settings. This cuts the electrical current to the Nitinol wire, triggering it to pull the copper into direct contact with the chipset. When you're done and don't want to use the cooler, electricity flows through the wire again, pushing the copper away so it physically disconnects from the chipset.
