Type III CRISPR systems typically contain ligand-activated accessory factors that bolster immunity. In this study, we characterise a novel ancillary gene, which we term Card1. Card1 is a ssDNase and ssRNase in vitro, and provide anti-phage and anti-plasmid immunity in vivo. This study expands the immune repertoire of bacteria, highlighting the diverse ways in which CRISPR systems counter threats.
