Does Volunteering Always Pay? An Experimental Analysis of the Impact of Prior Service in France

We conduct a correspondence test in which fictitious candidates list various types of skills and prior volunteer service activities on their resumés. First, we investigate whether the candidates improved their prospects of gaining employment. Second, we seek to measure whether the 2011 public campaign labelled “European year for volunteering services” itself had an impact on the employability of a candidate with volunteer experience.
