R&D personnel per sector of R&D execution, measured in Full-Time Equivalent (FTE). The official statistical data of R&D personnel concern the total of the country, with analysis in four sectors of R&D execution: Business Enterprise Sector (BES), Government Sector (GOV), Higher Education Sector (HES), Private non-Profit Sector (PNP). R&D personnel includes all those employed in R&D activities, scientists and engineers (researchers), high-level technical personnel as well as personnel who directly support the implementation of R&D activities (e.g. workers, manufacturers, administrative staff, etc.). Also included are those involved in the design and management of the work of other researchers (project managers). The Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) is a unit of measurement of the time that an employee devotes to research and/or development activities on an annual basis. It is calculated as the ratio of the time spent on R&D during a year to the annual working time equivalent to full employment. It takes values from 0 to 1.
