L'abolitionnisme britannique dans les relations anglo-portugaises: le cas de la colonie portugaise du Cap-Vert

Maria Rosaria Turano (1945-2009) wrote an article taking stock of the situation in Cape Verde concerning the issues of slavery and slave trade. She focused on the relations between Portugal and Great Britain, whose Parliament had outlawed the slave trade in 1807. The British tried to control the illegal trade across the Atlantic Ocean, and to this end they created a number of Anglo-Portuguese mixed commissions. One of these commissions was set up in Boa Vista, and here, Henry William Macaulay, the British commissary judge, played an important role. Hence, the publication of his
letter to the Portuguese Governor General as an appendix for the essay: a letter that is important to the understanding of the relations between Portugal and Great Britain, as well as relations within Cape Verde society in the 19th-century.
