FMT capsules improve symptoms in ulcerative colitis patients

Seven patients with active ulcerative colitis underwent a treatment regime with 25 fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) capsules daily for 50 days. The patients were followed with fecal samples for microbiota and fecal calprotectin analysis, an inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire and a simple clinical colitis activity index at regular visits for six months. All clinical tests and questionnaires indicated that the patients had an improvement during the study period. The alpha diversity of the patients' fecal microbiotas did not change significantly during the course of the study. Beta-diversity analysis indicated that patients whose microbiotas were more different from the fecal donors' evidenced the largest improvement in terms of fecal calprotectin levels.
