Composition and distribution of morphospecies and ecosystem services in the Rio Negro Sustainable Development Reserve

The main objective was to describe the composition and distribution of morphospecies of timber interest and the products and ecosystem services associated with these individuals. We collected data at two sites located in the Rio Negro RDS. At each site, two parallel 5 km trails separated by 1 km were surveyed. The data was collected in 500m segments, and in each segment we sampled the trees of timber interest detectable from the trail and which had a diameter at breast height - DBH ≥ 7 cm. Data collection consisted of identifying the morphospecies by Jânio Moura da Silva (a member of the local community), using the region's popular names. Biometric measurements were taken of the trees' height and Circumference at Breast Height (CAP), as well as recording the presence and absence of morphospecies producing Non-Timber Extractive Products and holes or cavities in the stem.
Tree height was estimated using a hypsometer for a sub-sample of 1/3 of the individuals. For unmeasured individuals, heights were estimated based on the average height of trees of the same morphospecies in the same vegetation association at each site. To determine the presence or absence of cavities likely to be used by vertebrates, we examined the trees with binoculars.
