A genre-specific measure of subjective feeling in music listening: Constructing the Durham Emotion in Qawwālī Scale (DEQS) [dataset]

This dataset contains the raw data, R script, and data tables produced by two studies focussing on subjective feeling felt by listeners to the South Asian genre of Sufi music known as qawwali. It specifically focusses on regular listeners to qawwali at the shrine of the Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi. These studies are based on the method used by Zentner and colleagues when they proposed the GEMS dimensions of musical emotion. We suggest that while Zentner's method affords a good data-driven approach to determining the most salient emotion terms for a particular group of listeners listening to a particular genre of music, it cannot be generalised beyond that context. Therefore, we adapt his method to develop a scale of subjective feeling for a group of listeners in a completely different context: qawwali.
