The dietary supplementation with feed additives is currently used in poultry production to flank strict biosecurity measures to foster antibiotic-free rearing programs. During the last decade, the interest in the use of herbs and phytogenic compounds has grown in view of their potential role on production and health in livestock animals. Among these compounds, plant tannins are polyphenolic compounds that exhibit an antioxidant activity, affect the composition of the gut microbial flora and stimulate the animal immune system, besides showing antibacterial properties.The present study aimed to get further insights in the molecular mechanisms underlying the response of broiler chickens of both sexes fed different tannins extracts (chestnut extract and grape pomace).
