George DempseyLay teacher of Literature and History at Belvedere College between 1884 and 1923, where he taught JJ. George Stanislaus Dempsey was born in Dublin and, already a "˜Professor', married Mary Ellen Doyle in 1888; she ran a grocery and post office at their house, 13 Dunville Avenue, in south-east Dublin. Dempsey was typically well-dressed, sported a moustache, and had a military bearing; pupils remembered him fondly. He died in Dublin, aged seventy, in 1924, and was buried at Glasnevin Cemetery. The George Dempsey Memorial prize is awarded annually at Belvedere College for excellence in English. John Simpson
