Hybrid breeding technology in potato will cause a boost in potato breeding. In the last years inbred diploid potato lines that combine good agronomic performance and self-compatibility were developed. However, the knowledge is still lacking to completely control self-(in)compatibility. The aim of the project is to get a better understanding of the self-compatibility mechanisms in diploid potato and the genetic and environmental factors that influence it. The possibility to better manipulate self-compatibility will be of utmost importance for introducing F1 hybrid potato seeds as efficiently as possible.
