Studies of Onchocerca volvulus (Ov) population biology may facilitate efforts to prevent, treat and eradicate onchocerciasis. Recent work has shown that Ov secretes microRNAs (miRNA) into the host circulation and that different miRNA species may be found in various geographic populations of Ov. In this study, we investigated the presence and diversity of Ov microRNAs in pools of sera from Ov microfilariae-positive subjects from the Americas, West Africa, Central Africa and East Africa, compared to uninfected nonendemic controls.
