Eastern Sicily Swarm Catalog (ESSC)

This site collects the swarms and sequences identified by the Seismic Analysis Group of the INGV - Etneo Observatory, based on the analysis of earthquakes located by the same group starting from 2020, within the areas of competence of the OE, such as Etna and the Aeolian Islands. In addition to these, the catalogue also includes swarms and sequences that, although falling outside the areas of competence, have been well localized. The purpose of this catalogue, which does not aim to provide universal criteria for defining swarms and sequences, is to offer a possible perspective on the ongoing seismicity in the areas of interest, in order to frame it within the local context. The areas under consideration, ranging from the Aeolian Islands in the north to the Iblean Foreland in the south, can highlight peculiar characteristics in the style of energy release, specifically through the distribution of seismicity, swarms, and/or sequences, along with the related associated parameters, thus providing a key to understanding the phenomena. The procedure adopted to distinguish a group of events, occurring within a predefined time window, into a swarm or sequence is based on a simple clustering algorithm, similar to that of Reasenberg (1985), and on the application of an empirical law based on local magnitude for the definition of the mainshock.
