A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a digital representation of the elevation data for a given topographic surface. It is a 3D representation, typically in the form of a raster, where each cell holds a value representing the elevation at that point. The DEM is a representation of the bare-earth topographic surface, meaning it excludes trees, buildings, and any other surface objects. Woolpert was contracted by Auckland Council to collect LiDAR data over the outer parts of the Auckland Region. This project was designed to be consistent with the 2024 NIWE LiDAR capture over central Auckland, essentially extending that data set to cover the entire Auckland region in one seamless acquisition. Separately, Regional Software Holdings Limited (RSHL), on behalf of the New Zealand Government, hired Woolpert to capture aerial LiDAR over storm-damaged areas in multiple regions, including Auckland. This DEM product is an upgraded, corrected, and improved version of the previous DEM published by Auckland Council on the Open Data portal.
