Comparative genomics of Datura species using RNAseq

We assessed the genetic control of the ontogenetic variation of defensive chemical traits and their response to herbivory. We examined the regulation of genes involved in the biosynthesis of tropane alkaloids at two different ontogenetic stages (juvenile and reproductive phases) in Datura stramonium. We also examined the regulatory response of mature plants to herbivory by the specialist herbivore Lema daturaphila. This is the first study that addresses gene control along ontogeny and in response to herbivores in Datura stramonium. This study aims to understand the underlying mechanisms of the secondary metabolisms of the plants and its role as adaptations to cope with herbivores.
