The Repartition of Direct Taxes in the Proosse in the Fifteenth Century

The collection of accounts in the archive document 11042 of the "Bruges Free Registers" fund in the State Archives in Bruges deals with the provost countries that were located within the Bruges Free and were directly administered and taxed by the College of Orators in Bruges. In the fifteenth century, these toasting countries were divided into eighteen sectors for the collection of taxes, named after the most important villages that were in those sectors (a partition technique that would change in the following centuries) and recorded as such in a list. This bundle of accounts provides an insight into the evolution of the settlements and pointings (direct taxes) in the Proosse.
