THE EVOLUTION OF ACADEMIC ENGLISH IN THE AGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Abstract: The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed the ways in which academic English is produced, taught, learned, and evaluated. Traditional academic English has historically emphasized formal language, logical argumentation, evidence-based writing, and adherence to established academic conventions. However, the emergence of generative AI technologies has introduced new possibilities for academic communication while simultaneously creating challenges related to authorship, originality, academic integrity, linguistic competence, and critical thinking. This article examines the evolution of academic English in the age of Artificial Intelligence and explores how AI-powered tools are influencing academic writing, language learning, research communication, and assessment. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach based on the analysis of existing academic literature and current developments in AI-assisted education. The findings suggest that AI can enhance academic English proficiency by providing personalized feedback, vocabulary support, grammatical correction, paraphrasing assistance, and opportunities for interactive learning. At the same time, excessive dependence on AI may reduce learners’ independent writing skills and critical engagement with academic texts. Therefore, the future of academic English should not be based on replacing human writers with AI but on developing an effective human-AI partnership in which technology supports linguistic development, while human researchers remain responsible for ideas, interpretation, argumentation, and ethical decision-making.
