Pharmaceutical industry is currently in a paradigm transition that aims to combine Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industry 4.0, and neural networks. These innovations are dramatically changing pharmaceutical manufacturing by fine tuning drug delivery systems, improving precision, lowering production costs and boosting product quality. Machine learning and deep learning models combined with other AI technologies are clearly significant for automating complex processes, predicting the release profiles of drugs, and enabling adaptive control systems in continuous manufacturing. The industry 4.0 technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), cyber physical systems and smart factories, has increased these transformations through seamless data connectivity and real-time monitoring. Artificial neural network (ANN), one of the latest neural networks, are becoming instrumental in solving complex optimization problems, design of novel drug delivery systems and formulation process improvement. In this review, we discuss these key technologies, their pharma applications, and how the technologies can shape the future of continuous manufacturing of drug substances in a sustainable way. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the landscape of modern pharmaceutical manufacturing through integration of case studies, industry trends and insights into the development and challenges of these technologies. As efforts on precision medicine are gaining momentum and accelerating, AI and Industry 4.0 will guide the way to personalized drug therapies and a better global health outcome for patients.
