The basidiomycete red yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides (Pucciniomycotina) produces very high levels of lipids when grown in nitrogen-limiting media, and has potential for biodiesel production. In order to investigate the biology of this yeast we have sequenced the genome of strain CGMCC 2.1609, which can accumulate high lipid levels.
