Plants sense and integrate diverse stimuli to determine the timing for the germination. A smoke compound, 3, 4, 5-trimethylfuran-2(5H)-one (TMB, trimethylbutenolide) has been identified to inhibit the seed germination of higher plants. To understand how the TMB exerts its inhibitory effect on seed germination, we assessed the TMB-dependent response of Arabidopsis seeds using RNA Seq.
