Government expenditure on council tax benefit in the UK 1970-2013

In 2012/13 council tax benefits in the UK amounted to approximately 6.6 billion pounds. On 1 April, 2013, council tax benefit was abolished by the government and replaced by 'council tax reduction'. This was designed to save the government money and meant that some households lost out on a part, or all, of the previous benefit they had been receiving.
