The objective of this study is to elucidate rRNA and rDNA synthesis among soil microorganisms using a combined RNA and DNA quantitative stable isotope probing (qSIP) with isotopically labeled water. During incubation of soil with 18O-water, metabolically active or growing taxa incorporate the oxygen isotopes into newly synthesized nucleic acids. These taxa are subsequently identified by sequencing of the ultracentrifuged and fractionnated rRNA and rDNA.
