POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT SITES AR-03-07-03-61, AR-03-07-03-865, AND AR-03-07-03-1158, ARIZONA

Pieces of daub/mortar from masonry structures found at sites AR-03-07-03-61, AR-03-07-03-865, and AR-03-07-03-1158 in northern Arizona were examined for pollen and macrofloral remains. These sites represent rock shelters near the north rim of the Grand Canyon and Basketmaker/Puebloan occupations of the area. Daub/mortar from sites AR-03-07-03-61 and AR-03-07-03-865 were collected from partially collapsed granaries in rock shelters that are believed to have been used for food storage and possible habitation. Daub/mortar from AR-03-07-03-1158 was taken from a storage structure/possible pit house in a shelter used for habitation and food storage. Pollen and macrofloral analyses will be used to provide information concerning plants used as binder in the daub/mortar and possibly also as ceremonial additives. The latter is considered if Zea mays is present, particularly if aggregates or anther fragments are observed.
