Ecology lab 4 - Designed experiment of group 2 (lab 08) in Keele campus on Oct 14 and Oct 21, 2015.

The designed experiment of group 2 was to compare the density of organism in tall grassland and short grassland. During the lab time (2:30 - 5:30) Oct 14 and Oct 21 2015, the experiment was conducted and data was collected. The location was the grassland beside the law school, both tall grassland and short grassland located there. The quadrat technique was applied to this experiment. There were 5 people in group 2, 2 person were assigned to one group and 3 person were assigned to the other one. The quadrat were set randomly and 30 spots was sampled in each area (tall grassland and short grassland).
One was assigned to the 2 people's group and responsible for setting the quadrat while the partner was responsible for recording data. Once the quadrat was set, the height of the grass was measured and the number of grass was counted. In tall grassland, only the tall grasses were counted and in short grassland, the quadrat was divided into 4 section and the grass in one of the section was counted due to the fact that the short grasses were growing crowded. Then the number of insects was counted and recorded. The quadrat was set randomly but still with the following rules: the adjacent spots for setting quadrats were at least 2 meters away from each other; spots with different height of plants were chosen to set quadrat; no same spot was sampled twice. The whole area was divided into 2 and each group was responsible for one. The reason for this was to avoid the same place being sampling twice. It was a sunny day in the first lab, the temperature was between 12 to 20 Celsius degree. It was colder on the day of the second lab, the temperature was between 6 to 14 Celsius degree and with light rain.
