To assess mRNA gene expression levels in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and healthy controls. Overall design: Two sigmoid colonic biopsies in close proximity were collected from patients with ulcerative colitis (n=59) and controls (n=19) during endoscopy. RNA from each biopsy was purified and analysed seprately using the Affymetrix HGU219 arrays on 96-PEG plates where 100 ng of RNA was labelled using the 3-IVT expression kit and hybridized to the HGU219 chip. Disease activity was assed by the Mayoscore (Schroeder et.al Coated Oral 5-Aminosalicylic Acid Therapy for Mildly to Moderately Active Ulcerative Colitis.
