Epichloe coenophiala is an important systemic, seed-transmitted fungal symbiont of the grass, tall fescue. It is an interspecific hybrid with three ancestors closely related to Epichloe baconii, Epichloe festucae and Epichloe poae, and is capable of producing ergot alkaloids, 1-aminopyrrolizidines (lolines) and the pyrrolopyrazine peramine. It helps protect the host plant from invertebrate and vertebrate herbivores, root-parasitic nematodes and drought, and its ergot alkaloids can be toxic to livestock.
