Understanding how gene dose problems are solved during vertebrate sex chromosome evolution has been hampered by the lack of heteromorphic genome sequences from species at the base of Tetrapoda. We provide a high-quality genome assembly of the African Bullfrog, the first amphibian genome to be assembled that has heteromorphic ZW sex chromosome. This assembly will be useful for understanding the evolution of sex-linked sequences among vertebrates, evolution of dosage compensation, and ongoing comparative genomic analysis to understand the function and organization of vertebrate genomes.
